Growing Connections is designed as a structured yet informal opportunity for students to connect across programs, share their research experiences, and build a broader sense of scholarly community here in Geneva. One important but often overlooked skill to develop as a scientist is the ability to explain your research in a clear and concise manner...especially to others who do not work in your immediate field of study. The Growing Connections Event is designed to help you work on this skill.
This event will take place on HWS campus and will be facilitated by HWS career development staff. Kim and I will also be attending the event with you. In addition to our group, there will be two other REU/intern groups present (HWS Summer Mentored Research Program and the Microplastics in the Environment REU program). The program leaders will give a brief overview of their programs then the facilitator will lead you all through a few guided networking activities.
Facilitators:
Jeremy Elliott-Engel, Associate Director, STEM Career Services, HWS
Jessica Townley, Associate Director, STEM Career Services, HWS
Speakers:
Kyle Wickings, Director, Cornell AgriTech REU
Nick Metz, Director, HWS Summer Mentored Research
Nan Arens, Director, Microplastics in the Environment REU
Location: HWS Campus - Coxe Hall, Barlett Theater (building #2 on the HWS campus map)
This is a fairly quick walk from the houses on St. Clair so, I suggest arriving back at the houses at 3:45 and walking down to Coxe Hall from there. The event will conclude at 5:00 and you’re free to walk back to the houses from there.
